Women Winemakers Case
Women Winemakers tearing up the rule book
Despite the overwhelming male dominance of the wine industry, we are increasingly tasting wine created by individual women who have torn up the rule book and broken down barriers. That is why this month, to celebrate International Women's Day and Mother's Day, we are shining a light on the incredibly talented female winemakers across the country.
So, this three bottle case containing three delicious, ground breaking wines - all produced by, you guessed it, talented women winemakers! First we have the Giffords Hall Bacchus made by Izzie McDonald. With a degree in both winemaking and viticulture, Izzie has worked as winemaker across the world, including in Bordeaux, Portugal and Market River in Australia. Bacchus is the main grape of England and you can really understand why once you've tasted this delicious wine. Izzie has created a fresh and crisp white that has green fruit aromas and elderflower flavours, a perfect example of the still white wines England is best known for.
Next is the Bolney Lychgate red made by Sam Linter from a blend of three red grape varieties. Bolney Estate was bought by Sam's parents when she was young and although she initially did not show an interest in winemaking she soon found a love for the craft. Back in the 90s Sam challenged herself to create a quality English red wine and we definitely think she hit the bullseye! The Lychgate red is full of blackberry and black cherry flavours. It is a great example of a cool climate red and just shows that England can produce some high-quality red wines. It's a big English Vine favourite.
Finally we have Nyetimber Classic Cuvee NV, often seen as one of the flagship sparkling wines of England. This high class sparkling is created by Cherie Spriggs. Originally from Canada, Cherie received a bottle of Nyetimber from her father in 2001 and loved it. 6 years later Cherie scored her dream job and became the head winemaker for the estate. This Nyetimber Classic Cuvee is elegant and delicate with flavours of honey and baked apples. This is just one example of a seriously good selection that Cherie produces and one we've always got stuck in the fridge for when that moment (and it doesn't take much) calls.
So cheers to all those amazing Women in Wine producing absolute winners. May many more follow!
